Kaafu Atoll

Kaashidhoo

Kaashidhoo is a large agricultural island in northern Kaafu Atoll, famous for ancient Buddhist ruins, lush farmlands, and authentic local life.

Kaashidhoo is one of the largest inhabited islands in the Maldives and a unique agricultural hub located approximately 86 km north of Malé. Geographically a mini-atoll with its own lagoon, it is administratively placed under Kaafu Atoll. The island is renowned for its rich soil supporting bananas, papayas, cucumbers, chilies, and coconuts, much of which is transported to Malé. Kaashidhoo is also home to ancient Buddhist-era ruins known as the 'Loamaafaanu site,' dating back over 800 years, offering insight into the Maldives' pre-Islamic history. The island has well-established schools, a health center, and a strong community identity. Reached by public ferry (5+ hours) or speedboat (2.5 hours), it offers a peaceful escape from crowded tourist spots.
