Kaafu Atoll

Hulhumalé

Hulhumalé is a modern artificial island and smart city built to relieve overcrowding in Malé, featuring sustainable urban planning and wide beaches.

Hulhumalé is a reclaimed artificial island located 8 km northeast of Malé, connected to Velana International Airport by a causeway. Built in phases starting in 1997, it now spans 468 hectares (4 km²) and is home to approximately 349,000 residents, making it the fourth largest island in the Maldives. Designed as a 'City of Hope' and smart city, Hulhumalé features eco-friendly building orientation, wind corridors, green spaces, electric buses, and bicycle lanes. The island offers wide sandy beaches, modern housing complexes, Central Park, sports facilities, and a growing commercial district. It serves as both a residential expansion of Malé and an increasingly popular transit point for travelers.
