Kaafu Atoll

Gaafaru

Gaafaru is a quiet fishing island on the outer edge of North Malé Atoll, known for its shipwreck snorkeling, pristine beaches, and authentic local charm.

Gaafaru is the only inhabited island of the natural Gaafaru Atoll (Gahaafaru), located approximately 60 km northwest of Malé on the outer edge of North Malé Atoll. The island measures about 0.5 km in width and 1 km in length, surrounded by the massive Gaafaru Falhu reef stretching over 18 km in diameter. This reef has historically proved disastrous to many vessels and now offers excellent snorkeling, diving, and shipwreck exploration. The island's 'Barulu Falhu' lagoon is the second largest in the Maldives and is famous for its turtle population. Gaafaru has a small, close-knit community engaged in fishing, carpentry, and guesthouse tourism. The island features shops, a school, a health center, pharmacy, youth club, playground, and futsal field. Its strong cultural identity and untouched charm make it ideal for travelers seeking authentic Maldivian hospitality.
