Dhuvaafaru is the most populous island in Raa Atoll, a planned resettlement community built after the 2004 tsunami for displaced residents of Kandholhudhoo.
Dhuvaafaru is the most populous island in Raa Atoll and one of the most significant planned resettlement projects in Maldivian history. The island was newly constructed and inhabited after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which completely destroyed Kandholhudhoo. The displaced population was initially hosted in Ungoofaaru in 2006 before being permanently relocated to Dhuvaafaru in 2008. The island was designed with modern infrastructure, wider roads, and better-planned housing than typical Maldivian islands. Dhuvaafaru features schools, a health center, sports facilities, and local shops serving its large community. The island's residents have built a strong community identity despite their displacement, maintaining cultural traditions while embracing new opportunities. Visitors can learn about post-tsunami reconstruction efforts, experience resilient community spirit, and enjoy the island's beaches and lagoon.
