Utheemu is a historic island famous as the birthplace of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu, the national hero who liberated the Maldives from Portuguese rule.
Utheemu is one of the most historically significant islands in the Maldives, renowned as the birthplace and home of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu, the national hero who liberated the country from Portuguese rule in 1573. The island's main attraction is Utheemu Ganduvaru (Utheemu Palace), the wooden palace where the Sultan grew up, which has been preserved as a museum and is a site of pilgrimage for Maldivians. In 1558, the Portuguese invaded the Maldives, and Mohamed Thakurufaanu along with his brothers left for Minicoy to build the legendary boat Kalhuohfummi and plan their campaign. After eight years of resistance, they defeated the Portuguese in Malé, and Thakurufaanu was chosen as Sultan, ruling for 12 years until 1585. Utheemu offers visitors a profound connection to Maldivian history and identity, with its preserved palace, traditional architecture, and stories of resistance that continue to inspire the nation. The island maintains a quiet, respectful atmosphere befitting its historical importance.
