Vilufushi is a northern inhabited island in Thaa Atoll with a tragic yet resilient history. The island suffered the most casualties of any island in the Maldives during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, with its entire population of approximately 1,900 displaced. Residents were relocated to Burunee in the same atoll. The island has since been rebuilt, and some residents have returned. Vilufushi features a school, health center, and local shops. The island's recovery story is a testament to the resilience of Maldivian communities. Visitors can learn about post-tsunami reconstruction efforts and experience the enduring spirit of the island's residents. Vilufushi's northern location provides access to rich fishing grounds and pristine marine environments.
