Fares-Maathodaa is a southern island in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, formed by the joining of two islands, with a traditional fishing community and rich marine surroundings.
Fares-Maathodaa is one of the inhabited islands of Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, located in the southern part of the atoll approximately 441 km south of Malé. The island was formed when Fares and Maathoda, originally two separate islands, were joined by reclamation of the shallow water passage between them during the 1990s. Today unified as one, the locals' livelihood is mostly dependent on fishing. The island covers an area of 48.7 hectares and features a school, health center, and local shops serving its community. The surrounding waters offer excellent fishing opportunities and access to pristine marine environments. Visitors can experience authentic southern Maldivian island life, enjoy fresh seafood, and explore the island's beaches and lagoon. Fares-Maathodaa's southern location provides access to rich fishing grounds and beautiful natural surroundings.
