Thinadhoo is the capital of Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, a historic city with the largest population and strong cultural identity in the southern Huvadhu region.
Thinadhoo City is the capital of Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll (Southern Huvadhu Atoll) and serves as the administrative, economic, and cultural hub for the atoll's inhabited islands. Located approximately 407 km south of Malé, Thinadhoo is the most populous island in the atoll and was granted city status in 2023. The island has a vibrant history as the former seat of the Atoll Chief and was the economic hub of the United Suvadive Republic. Thinadhoo houses the atoll council, government offices, schools including Maldives National University campus, a regional hospital, and local markets. The island's residents are engaged in fishing, government services, trade, and traditional crafts. Thinadhoo has its own distinct dialect of Dhivehi. Visitors can experience authentic southern Maldivian culture, enjoy fresh seafood, and use Thinadhoo as a base for exploring the atoll's pristine marine environments.
