Gadhdhoo is the second most populated island in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll and served as the atoll capital for more than ten years after Thinadhoo was depopulated in 1962. The island is renowned for its traditional mat weaving (Gadhdhoo Kunaa), where local women weave beautiful mats with patterns in three colors using hibiscus bark and local grass. These mats were historically part of the annual tribute to the Maldive Royal House. Gadhdhoo has its own distinct southern dialect of Dhivehi. The island features a school, health center, and local shops. The surrounding waters offer excellent fishing opportunities. Visitors can experience authentic southern Maldivian culture, observe traditional mat weaving, and enjoy fresh seafood. Gadhdhoo's combination of cultural significance and traditional craftsmanship makes it a unique destination within the atoll.
