Fiyoaree is a southern island in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll with significant Buddhist archaeological remains and a traditional fishing community.
Fiyoaree is one of the inhabited islands of Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, located approximately 439 km south of Malé. The island is renowned for its Buddhist archaeological remains including a large stupa ruin measuring about 32 feet in circumference and 3 feet in height on the western side. These remains have not been properly investigated yet. Fiyoaree is also the only island where the original raw materials of met (thudukuna) are growing. The island's residents are primarily engaged in fishing and traditional crafts. Women of this island historically used to weave mats of good quality. Fiyoaree features a school and basic health services. The surrounding waters offer excellent fishing opportunities and healthy coral reefs. Visitors can explore the archaeological sites, learn about the Maldives' pre-Islamic Buddhist past, and experience authentic southern Maldivian island life.
