Rathafandhoo is a southwestern island in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll famous for sea cucumber fishery, handicrafts, and traditional mat weaving.
Rathafandhoo is an inhabited island of Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, located on the southwest side of South Huvadhu Atoll approximately 436 km south of Malé. The island is famous for its handicrafts and mat weaving (kunaa) made from a local plant called Hau. The islanders are renowned for their sea cucumber fishery, serving as a collection center and major base for fishermen operating in the southern Maldives. More than 10 registered companies carry out collecting, cooking, and drying sea cucumbers for export. Rathafandhoo features a school with 155 students, a health center providing basic care, and a police station. The island has several NGOs including RASFARI and READY. Visitors can experience authentic southern Maldivian culture, observe traditional crafts, and explore the island's beaches and lagoon.
